For the first time, Wellesbourne Allotments were delighted to take part in Sustainable Wellesbourne’s Opening Gardens for Wildlife event on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th May.
Six plots were opened over the weekend, centred around the Dementia Plot. Despite unpredictable weather, around 140 visitors came along to explore the allotments, meet plot holders and discover more about growing and the wildlife found across the site.
Highlights included Helen’s impressive wheat crop on Plot 4B, which she is growing to create her own ‘loaf of bread’, as well as newts in the pond on Plot 6A, evidence of hedgehogs and a fascinating collection of moths recorded using a light trap.
Teas and cakes served from the Dementia Plot raised £160 for allotment funds, while Wellesbourne and Walton Horticultural Society generously donated £300 towards our new notice board. Their plant stall also featured plants grown by WWHS members at the allotments.
The wider event raised over £900, with £450 donated to Butterfly Conservation Warwickshire and the remaining funds, after expenses, being reserved for local nature and future-friendly projects.
