Harvest The Sweetest Veg Imaginable and Meet Matt & Helen From BBC TV Countryfile

John, Gillian & Willo Plot 5B & 6B

As seen on BBC Countryfile 2019

Around January 2018 Simon contacted us stating plots were available, it was on a cold damp January morning where we first ventured on to the Allotments. This is where we first saw Plot 5B and agreed that was the one for us. This was our first steps into the world of Allotments and that of Plot holders having never had an Allotment before.

Once the February cold and rain had subsided we ventured down to our Plot. Initial thoughts were “This looks a lot bigger than we remembered, there’s a lot to do”. With tasks prioritised, weeding, clearing, allocating spaces we soon turned it around putting our own mark on things. The AGM was interesting, as new plot holder we thought let’s go. Lots of emotion and great debate was had in the room. It was easy to see why, given the Diocesan proposals to sell off part of the allotments site for housing. We left the meeting with total respect of the committee and all the volunteers as they do a great job.

Fellow plot holders are so friendly, giving a friendly wave as they pass by or chatting imparting valuable knowledge to us “Newbies”. We are ever grateful to the oracle Colin. You get a real sense of community spirit on the Allotment this really shone through when preparing the Dementia Plot and putting up the “Big Shed” this was helped by plentiful supplies of Bacon Butties and a beer.

The Open Day was another example with fantastic collaboration, everyone pulling together culminating in the best Open Day ever what a great achievement and a credit to the community. We have worked hard on our plot over the months with many learning points, don’t plant peas so early and we now know why some refer to pigeons as rats with wings !

We have two sheds thanks to the generosity Jess and Mo. One is now a summerhouse where we sit and admire the fruits of our labours and watch the occasional fox pass by or Red Kite fly low overhead. The other, the Operations Centre, where we keep the all-important Watering Cans. There are set backs, slugs, moles, pigeons, white fly but that’s all a part of Allotment life. This year being especially challenging due to the long hot spell with endless watering.

To crown our first year off we were chosen (by an independent RHS judge) as Best New Plot Holder of the Year. When Ken told us the emotions just welled up inside we never expected the recognition, what an honour. Anyone thinking shall we put our names down, just do it, give it ago. The joy of watching your hard work come together producing a crop no matter how big or small or how good a result is a tremendous feeling of achievement . The minute you turn into the Allotments you get a real feeling of day to day life stresses ebbing away, happy digging.

We love it here and were so thrilled with 5B that we applied for a second plot. We were fortunate that when our turn came around 6B was vacant, it was over grown but grateful accepted the challenge
